Who we are
Hey! We're Nick & Danny — friends for calculating... and running Designfreaks together since 2016.
2007
Nick and Danny's journey in web design began, when they each started personal blogs to share their everyday lives and offer free designs and graphics.
2008 / 09
Nick went by the name Designfreak and Danny was known as Musicfreak. Interestingly, they both chose similar names for their websites, even though they didn't know each other!
2010
They finally met and launched their first team site, Boombox. It started off strong, but after a hacking incident, they faced challenges in getting it back up.
2016 - 2017
Six years later, they decided to bring Boombox back to life. This time, they didn't want to rely on free hosting anymore. There had been too many random downtimes and other issues. They wanted their own webspace.
So they started looking for available free top level domains. And then... conspiracy moment. Right after they found the one they wanted, an advertising company suddenly bought it. Seriously.
Out of frustration, they tweeted about it. Ironically, the domain site they used to check availability actually replied. 👀
So, a new name it was. Since they both started out as freaks, Designfreaks just felt natural.
2018
The site ran smoothly and even celebrated its second anniversary. However, due to personal reasons, Designfreaks was closed.
2024
About six years later, history kind of repeated itself. After the site was closed in 2018, the domain was quickly picked up by an advertising company. That's pretty normal with expired domains, they usually hope someone buys it back for way too much. Still, it felt ironic considering what had happened years earlier.
Eventually, the domain became free again. Danny noticed it and grabbed it, mostly as a joke. He even put up a little image saying "no, there won't be a comeback" in case old visitors checked in.
A few months later, Danny showed nick the new design for his personal blog, danieljason.de. They joked how much it reminds them of the old Designfreaks designs, and the jokes turned into "okay but... imagine?" And just like that, Designfreaks was back for a new chapter. Looks like the little image Danny put up saying "no, there won't be a comeback" ended up being a self-fulfilling prophecy!
2025
It started with just a few simple color options in the sidebar theme switcher, but it quickly turned into a whole seasonal thing. By the end of the year, they reached a total of 10 themes, going all out with floating ghosts for Halloween and super cozy, old school vibes for Christmas, complete with snow, festive graphics, and an advent calendar with 24 daily surprises.
2026 - Now
It was about damn time to finally remove the seasonal themes, but they didn't want to rush it. Then nick had a dream where Danny showed him the new Designfreaks design. Danny loves everything circus themed, and in the dream he said something like "Wouldn't this totally fit our name? We're called Designfreaks after all, let's do a circus themed design!" And that was the inspiration going forward for the start of 2026!
And they all lived happily ever after. <3
